LILIANE TOMASKO

Caja de Sueños (Box of dreams)

25. November 2018 bis 27. Januar 2019

Museu MATE, Lima, Peru

The exhibition will include six recent paintings by the artist and a mural inspired by her visit to the Bogotalla Lines in Nazca.

Liliane Tomasko explores painting as a gateway into the realms of dreaming and sleep, probing into the gulf between the conscious and the subconscious. Tomasko believes that the imbalance between these two states of mind is at the heart of the predicaments that a ect contemporary society. In her words, “the dark matter represented by the subconscious, and which finds its language through our dreams has been neglected.” Each of the six paintings in the exhibition underscores this breach by making reference to an emotional state. The three larger works allude to unfolding, opening and growing, whereas the three black- and-white, smaller ones speak of denial, invisibility and stagnation. Tomasko’s gestural lines are woven together in such way that they come in and out of focus, emulating the clarity, or lack thereof, of dreams and memories.

THE BOGOTALLA LINES

For this exhibition, Tomasko traveled to southern Peru to visit the Nazca Lines for the first time. Drawn to them by their mysterious nature and sheer scale, she first encountered them in the late 90’s at an exhibition at the Rietberg Museum in Zürich. Since then, she has felt an ever-growing longing to see them in the flesh—to walk along them as those who created them once did. This dream came to life when, guided by an archeologist, Tomasko walked the Bogotalla Lines in the Ingenio district of Nazca, an experience that later developed into a mural installation. “I wanted to recreate them on the wall of the gallery space where my paintings are installed, like a matrix that holds them in place, and a homage to the lines that have brought me and my works to Lima,” she explains. Executed in masking tape, the mural is both an echo of the ancient ground drawings and a record of Tomasko’s pathway through the desert ground.
